"A" Foto / "THE" Photo

O que faz uma foto ser boa ou má? Como podemos julgar uma foto ser melhor do que a outra? No meu caso penso que tem a ver com aquilo que sinto ao olhar para ela.

Há cerca de duas semana atrás o grande Filipe Melo ligou-me a pedir se podia ir fotografar um músico de jazz que iria estar a tocar com ele nessa semana no Tivoli. Claro que disse logo que sim. Depois fui ver quem era esse músico. Chama-se Benny Golson e é um dos últimos grandes mestres do Jazz, da era do Miles Davis, ainda vivo. Aliás, conviveu com o Miles e o John Coltrane entre outros.

Estar ali com uma lenda da música mundial já era uma enorme honra, mas nunca pensei que nessa noite iria fazer aquela que considero "A" foto. É daquelas fotos que paro para pensar como é que raio é que a consegui fazer... Mas também é daquelas fotos que me diz que estou a seguir o caminho certo.

What makes a picture good or bad? How can we judge if a picture is better than the other? In my case I think it has to do with what I feel when I look at her. 

About two weeks ago the great Filipe Melo called me asking if I could go shoot a jazz musician that would be playing with him that week in Tivoli. Of course I said yes. Then I went to see who was that musician. His name is Benny Golson and is one of the last great masters of the Jazz-era Miles Davis, still alive. He was in that era with Miles and John Coltrane among others. 

Being there with a  music legend was already a huge honor, but I never thought that night I would do what I consider "THE" picture. It's one of those photos that I stop to think how the hell did I made it... But it's the kind of photo that tells me I'm following the right path.

E agora para algo diferente: Comida! / And now for something different: food!

Ora desta vez fotografei um tema um pouco diferente: comida!
Dia 15 e 16 de Abril deste ano aconteceu um  evento de Guerilla Dinning, organizado pelo colectivo Silver Spoon e o restaurante Eleven. Silver Spoon é originário  de Copenhaga e tem por conceito criar eventos em locais pouco prováveis e com curta duração.

Neste caso foi um jantar gourmet nas abandonadas instalações do Museu da Rádio, imaginado pelo chef dinamarquês William Milsted.

Na primeira noite tive o privilégio de poder jantar e provar o menu. Sim, era mesmo muito bom!
Para a segunda noite foi-me pedido pela produtora Rebel Act, que filmasse o evento. O resultado dessas filmagens pode ser visto aqui:

Também aproveitei para fazer o registo em fotos, o que não foi nada fácil pois era literalmente um jantar à luz das velas e com alguns holofotes na zona da "cozinha".
Gostei bastante de fazer este evento e de poder ver de perto chefs de topo a fazerem a sua arte. Apesar das escassas condições, os pratos eram muito bons, tanto no paladar como no visual. Esta semana houve mais um evento desses em Lisboa. Penso que voltarão mais vezes, por isso é estar atento ao site deles:

This time I photographed a slightly different subject: food!
The 15th and 16th April of this year, a Guerilla Dinning event happened, organized by the Silver Spoon collective and Eleven restaurant. Silver Spoon is originally from Copenhagen and they re concept is to create events in unlikely places and with short duration.

In this case it was a gourmet dinner in the abandoned premises of Radio Museum, imagined by Danish chef William Milsted.

On the first night I had the privilege of enjoying the dinner menu. Yes, it was really good!
For the second night I was asked by the producer Rebel Act, to film the event. The result of these shots can be seen up in the blog.

I also took some photos, which was not easy because it was literally a candlelight dinner with some spotlight in the "kitchen" area.
I really liked to do this event and to be able to see close and personal top chefs making their art. Despite the sparse conditions, the dishes were very good, both in taste and in look. This week there was another such event in Lisbon. I think they'll do it more often, it's just a matter of being attentive to their website:

O dia em que conheci um génio da música / The day I met a music genius

Ontem foi o aniversário do falecido Bernardo Sassetti.

Sempre segui a sua música e nunca pensei que teria a oportunidade de o conhecer. Em 2011, quando estava a acompanhar as gravações do álbum de Sérgio Godinho "Mútuo Consentimento", tive essa oportunidade pois o Bernardo iria fazer parte do piano da música "Em dias Consecutivos".

Era o meu segundo trabalho a filmar dentro de um estúdio e claro que entrei no estúdio nervoso, mas ele deixou-me imediatamente à vontade. Só conheci o Bernardo nesse dia, mas posso dizer que deixou uma marca. Era um ser humanos muito especial e muito dado. Curioso em várias áreas como o cinema, assim que me viu com a minha máquina, começou logo a fazer perguntas sobre ela com genuíno interesse. Um homem muito intenso, mas com uma grande alegria e paixão pelo que fazia.
Só posso dizer que foi um dia que me marcou bastante e que fico feliz por poder tê-lo registado.

Yesterday was the birthday of the late Bernardo Sassetti. 

I always had follow his music and never thought I would have the opportunity to meet him. In 2011, when I was recording the Sérgio Godinho album "Mútuo Consentimento", I had this opportunity because Bernardo would make the piano part of the song "Em Dias Consecutivos". 

It was my second job filming inside a studio and I entered the studio nervous, but he left me immediately at ease. I only met Bernardo that day, but I can say that it left a mark in me. He was a very special and given human being. Curious in various areas such as cinema, when he saw me with my camera, he soon began to ask questions about it with genuine interest. A very intense man, but with a great joy and passion for what he did. 
I can only say it was a day that marked me a lot and I am happy to have it registered.

Rita no LUX

E a 15 de Maio a Rita Redshoes teve o seu 1º concerto de apresentação do novo álbum, "Life is a Second of Love". Lá estive e pude ver mais uma evolução no seu espectáculo e na sua maneira de estar em palco.
Este não é um álbum fácil de tocar ao vivo e de mostrar a uma plateia que estava habituada aos seus trabalhos anteriores, mas a Rita entregou-se mais uma vez e não teve receio de mostra um lado diferente.
Também teve a participação do produtor do álbum que partilha com ela uma canção, o Gui Amabis.

Mais uma vez, tenho que deixar uma nota para quem criou o sensacional jogo de luz deste concerto. Neste caso foi o grande Carlos Carvalho da FX Roads Lights, uma das grandes empresas de iluminação nacionais. Visitem o facebook deles que vão perceber:  Fx Road Lights
Neste caso, o Carlos conseguiu, num espaço bem pequeno, criar todas uma atmosfera que retrata perfeitamente esta nova fase da Rita!

And on May 15 Rita Redshoes had the presentation concert of her new album "Life is a Second of Love". I was there and could see a further evolution in her show and her way of being on stage. 
This is not an easy album to play live and show an audience that was accustomed to her previous music, but Rita lete everything on stage one more time and was not afraid to show a different side. 
She also had the participation of the producer of the album that shares with it a song her, Gui Amabis. 

Again, I have to leave a note for those who created the sensational light for this concert. In this case it was the amazing Carlos Carvalho from FX Roads Lights. Visit their facebook and you will understand why: Fx Road Lights
In this case, Carlos managed in a very small space, to create an atmosphere that perfectly portrays this new phase of Rita! And I made great photos because of it.
